Dr. Acker was born and raised in Bronx, NY. He moved to Spring Valley, New York before high school and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1972. He then attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, where he earned a BS in Biology in 1976, and and MS in Biomedical Engineering in 1977. He graduated from New York University College of Dentistry in 1980 with a DDS.
After dental school, Dr. Acker was one of 200 applicants to the high powered two year General Practice Residency Program at the Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center. He was one of the 3 graduates accepted and trained under the workd renowned implantologist and dentist, Dr. Norman Cranin for the next two years. In his second year of the residency, he was appointed Chief Resident of the Department. Brookdale’s program had the reputation as being one of the most stringent and diverse medically based residencies in the country.
After residency, Dr. Acker began his career in private practice in Staten Island, New York. He also remained on staff at Brookdale Hospital as a teaching Attending Doctor, where he still actively teaches and helps keep the long traditions of academic excellence of the department alive today.
Dr. Acker remains committed to teaching and learning. Dr. Acker continued his education by becoming a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology after training with Dr. Carl Misch in 1997. He is also a graduate of the prestigious Kois Center in Seatlle, Washington, after completing the entire course of study with Dr. Jon Kois, one of the foremost dental educators and clinicians in the United States.
In addition to his commitment to teaching at Brookdale Hospital, he has lectured in numerous other venues including several lectures at the Great New York Dental Meeting, the last of which in Novemeber of 2007.
Elite Dental of Staten Island is a completely independent community based practice in New York City, in the boro of Staten Island. Dr. Acker’s mission has always been to educate and treat patients without the influence of third parties. Elite Dental has signed no agreements with insurance companies either to solicit or treat patients, although Dr. Acker is committed to helping patients understand and benefit properly from any insurance benefits that they may have.
Dr. Acker is also extremely active in the business community of Staten Island, and has served as President of the Staten Island Bucks Business Network, a group of over 70 local businesses that are committed to excellence and support for our community.
Enhanced by his dental and engineering background, Dr. Acker and Elite Dental of Staten Island have embraced and used the highest level of technology available in dentistry today, including CAD/CAM (CEREC) and digital xray and diagnostics. This became possible due to his high level of training and commitment to excellence.
