content 08 Implants Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Am I a candidate for dental implants?
A. Most adolescents and adults are candidates. The main limitation can be the amount of available bone. Fortunately, bone grafting techniques can be employed in these types of cases.

Q. Will I have teeth during the interim?
A. Yes. Normally, Dr Acker will utilize an appliance, bonding or the patient’s existing removable prosthesis so that at no time does the patient ever have to go without teeth.

Q. Will it hurt? How much?
A. You will not feel ANYTHING, other than occasional mild pressure during the procedure. We use the latest in sedation and pain management techniques. Recovery pain varies depending on the severity of the case.

Q. Will I be under general anesthesia?
A. Sedation is optional. Some patients choose to have their procedure done with local anesthetics (numbing agents) only while others do fine with oral medications taken before the appointment to help them relax. For the most part, most cases are done in the office using conscious sedation. If general anesthesia is required, these patients are treated at a local surgery center or at the hospital. Conscious sedation is very safe and allows for these procedures to be performed without pain and usually without memory of the procedure.

Q. How soon will I recover?
A. Most people can return to work the very next day. You may prefer to schedule on a Friday or take a few days off.

Q. What is the difference between a transplant and an implant?
A. Implants are made from surgical titanium (a bioinert metail) and therefore cannot be rejected. There can be a failure with implants if you are at increased risk (e.g. uncontrolled diabetes or smokers with a greater than one pack per day habit) or failure to maintain proper homecare of the implants with regular followup checkups with your dentist.

Q. How soon after can I eat and can I eat regular foods?
A. Adequate food and fluid intake following the procedure is most important. You will be advised to eat soft foods from one day to a week depending on your case.

Q. Will my new teeth look natural?
A. Their appearance, comfort and function are very likely to exceed your expectations.

Q. How will I care for my implants?
A. Your new teeth must be cared for and checked regularly, just like your own natural teeth. Brushing and flossing are recommended. In addition, you will be given supplementary cleaning devices to ensure effective daily plaque and food removal. You should also see your dentist every six months or more frequently if advised.

Q. How long can I expect my implants to last?
A. Each and every case is different. Variables such as the patient’s health, their ability to effectively clean around their teeth and implants, routine checkups, etc. all effect the long term prognosis for long term implant success. Most implants that are placed nowadays will last patients a lifetime.
